Sardinia is the first geo-mineral park in the world to be recognised by UNESCO. In this area, infrastructures, industrial and civil artefacts, and signs of cultivation and mining processes blend with a natural territory with little anthropization, lacking a modern and functional connective network, that creates a mining landscape which is vast and diversified but at the same time dispersed and hidden by a general patina of degradation and abandonment. These factors make the Sardinian mining landscape difficult to read and therefore difficult to represent with the canonical cartographic tools.

Abstract

Sardinia is the first geo-mineral park in the world to be recognised by UNESCO. In this area, infrastructures, industrial and civil artefacts, and signs of cultivation and mining processes blend with a natural territory with little anthropization, lacking a modern and functional connective network, that creates a mining landscape which is vast and diversified but at the same time dispersed and hidden by a general patina of degradation and abandonment. These factors make the Sardinian mining landscape difficult to read and therefore difficult to represent with the canonical cartographic tools.
