The well-known amphora with Ajax’s suicide attributed to Exekias is on show in the small museum of Boulogne-sur-Mer. A recent restoration has completely uncovered an initials graffitied on the foot of the vase. Moreover, the restoration has clarified the non-relevance of the foot to the amphora. Some details reveal an ancient repair that proves the considerable value that the vase must have possessed. This short contribution dedicated to my friend Mario aims to offer some hypotheses on the modalities, motivations and origin of this special attention given to the vase.
