Georg Simmel’s analyses of Rembrandt and Roland Barthes’s of photography can give us a cue to answer this question. This essay proposes a reading based on the ontological difference that the photographic portrait, as read by Barthes, and the pictorial one, as interpreted by Simmel, establish with the dimension of time and space.
