Fish quality characterisation is needed when new diets are administered. Near-infrared spectrophotometry (NIRS) is a quantitative method. In comparison to traditional methods: little or no sample preparation, quick, less reagents, cheaper, more sustainable. Feasibility of using a portable NIRS to assess and discriminate the qualitative characteristics of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed alternative protein sources. The portable NIR was combined with a benchtop NIRS and traditional laboratory methods.
