Le foreste tra tarda antichità e medioevo: note per una storia culturale dell'ambiente

Il bosco è un ecosistema complesso e costituisce il principale elemento rivelatore del rapporto tra l’uomo e la natura. Fin dalle più remote epoche storiche, le aree forestali furono innanzitutto spazi fisici abitati, coltivati e utilizzati per le risorse che offrivano (legno, selvaggina, frutti, essenze, pascolo, carbone) anche in relazione alle pratiche agricole (ignicoltura, disboscamento e messa a coltura). Ma le foreste furono anche spazi culturali, che si riflettono negli stessi lessici del bosco e nelle forme della religiosità. La ricostruzione storica oggi è arricchita da ricerche archeologiche e di climatologia storica, ma deve anche confrontarsi con nuove prospettive di global history e environmental history e nuove sensibilità e abitudini di vita della società attuale. The forest is a complex ecosystem and represents the main indicator of the relationship between humans and nature. Since the earliest historical periods, forest areas were first and foremost physical spaces inhabited, cultivated, and used for the resources they offered (wood, game, fruits, essences, pasture, charcoal), also in relation to agricultural practices (slash and burn, deforestation, and cultivation). But forests were also cultural spaces, which are reflected in the same lexicon of the forest and in the forms of religiosity. Historical reconstruction today is enriched by archaeological and historical climatology research, but must also confront new perspectives of global history and environmental history, and new sensitivities and lifestyles of current society
