Doing family and intimacy at a distance. Implications for theory and social change

This volume aims to investigate the role of emotions in key societal institutions thought of as the pillars of society. This includes taking a look at the nation, state, law and the military, constituting what we call a society. Rather than demonstrating as many previous collective volumes and Handbooks that the Sociology of Emotions is capable of posing and answering innovative questions of relevance to the various more established fields of Sociology, it will demonstrate that the Sociology of Emotions does not only investigate micro-level, face-to-face or face-machine-face interactions, but also such key institutions as the family or the school. This Handbook has a triple aim: a) to show that the Sociology of Emotions has accumulated much research on key societal institutions and thus contributes to Sociology in general and to the (neo-)institutional sociology in particular b) to take stock of this accumulated research in order to find out what is the value-added of the Sociology of Emotions: to answer the question what it teaches us about the key societal institutions, societies and states in which we live today c) to allow formulating an agenda for future studies in the Sociology of Emotions which goes beyond specific projects
