A powerful marble bust of cardinal Agostino Galamini (1552–1639), preserved in the town of Osimo, in the Marche region, has – with the exception of an attribution to Alessandro Algardi by Damian Dombrowski – received little scholarly attention. As a result of newly discovered archival documents, it is now possible to ascertain an attribution to Gianlorenzo Bernini’s pupil Andrea Bolgi (1606–1656) and to date the bust to the final years of the sculptor’s Roman stay. The aim of this paper is to place the bust in the context of Bolgi’s artistic production, especially as a portraitist, and to examine it in relation to the oeuvre of other prominent contemporary sculptors, including Bernini and Algardi, as well as Giuliano Finelli. Moreover, attention will be devoted to the reconstruction of the dismantled sepulchral monument of the cardinal which comprised, in addition to the surviving marble bust, sculptural elements in bronze executed by the brothers Jacometti.
