Beyond the Manifest Image. The Myth of the Given across Determination and Disposition

To regard phenomenology as a strategy for clarifying (in the sense of providing an explicitation) of experience is to focus on the Manifest image and to consider the Scientific image as derivative and secondary. From this point of view, the phenomenological approach and the Sellarsian approach diverge profoundly. This contribution aims, however, to show not only and not so much the well-known differences as the consistent similarities between the two points of view. In order to do this, it will be necessary to show the different ways in which a phenomenological clarification of experience is possible, ways that are not always ascribable to the notion of Manifest image. Reading experience in terms not of determinations or characteristics but of dispositions will allow us to get beyond the clash between Manifest Image and Scientific Image and to explore an alternative path.
