Crustaceans, particularly decapods, are considered good model organisms to study behaviour for their species richness and diversity, relatively large size, widespread availability and their suitability for rearing in laboratory conditions. They have been extensively used to investigate relevant ethological theories, such as sexual selection, animal contests, resource assessment or social recognition, providing valuable inputs on these themes. Their behaviour has been studied also to improve production in aquaculture and gain more information on their ecology for conservation purposes.

Abstract

Crustaceans, particularly decapods, are considered good model organisms to study behaviour for their species richness and diversity, relatively large size, widespread availability and their suitability for rearing in laboratory conditions. They have been extensively used to investigate relevant ethological theories, such as sexual selection, animal contests, resource assessment or social recognition, providing valuable inputs on these themes. Their behaviour has been studied also to improve production in aquaculture and gain more information on their ecology for conservation purposes.
