Abstract
Cities are built by types. A house between two walls. In the begin- ning two parallel walls at a distance of one beam, adapting the tradition to what is practically possible and necessary. The starting point is here in Frankfurt an act of resistance by the historical European city. Dom Römer: destroyed in 1944 and shabbily rebuilt after the war: the same amnesia’s fate of other German cities. The Dom-Römer area was rebuilt after the war to serve as a space for a parking lot and pu- blic buildings forgetting its pre-war urban fabric, its former life. In attempting to recall the lost memory, the whole area has been coura- geously re-demolished in recent years. A call for an architectural com- petition was issued by the City of Frankfurt (2010), trying to give back to this place an identity and a size. The district was restored on the basis of the old land registry; now reconstructing the houses as they were with an almost obsessive opera- tion of faithful reconstruction (how could it be different?), now entru- sting their construction to projects that continually interact with the old without giving up the new.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
