This essay focuses on the decisive dramaturgical role of Poggi-Salieri’s libretto La locandiera (1773), first musical rewriting of Goldoni’s comedy, which inaugurated the European musical fortune of the most famous opera in the history of Italian theatre. Goldoni’s dramaturgical design is analysed and compared with key scenes from the Viennese libretto. This version, performed by singers mostly specialized in comic roles, reduces the original comedy to a conventional and wellcrafted product for foreign audiences unaware of the complexity of Goldoni’s play. In the process of transmission and circulation of the Italian theatrical language into that of the Habsburg capital, La locandiera by Poggi-Salieri represents an essential junction at the crossroads between prose and verse, word and music, acted and sung theatre.
