Bouboulina and Italian Philhellenism

The chapter explores how Bouboulina was received among Italian Philhellenes, particularly in the literary publication, Antologia, a periodical involved in raising awareness about the Greek movement for independence. He examines the political suppression of information by censors who wanted to downplay the depictions of the fates of Greece and Italy as being symbolically parallel to one another during the period of the Italian Risorgimento. However, in the Italian literary salons, many of which were run by Greek women of the diaspora who had come from the Ionian islands and established a network in Livorno, the Greek Revolution and activism around Italian unification went hand in hand
