This paper is a summary reworking of research on early school leaving and dropout conducted for the municipality of Florence. Here we intend to highlight what educational poverty means, above all, what consequences this condition may have for children and young people in their relationship with the world of schooling and for their educational success. It will then be dealt with how the school policy itself and, consequently, the educational system implemented have responsibilities in maintaining a situation of cultural and economic deprivation, which has quite direct repercussions in the phenomena of school dropouts and dropouts. Finally, with reference to the research conducted some educational and social actions called to intervene to interrupt the negative fate of marginalization that children, in spite of themselves, have to live through will be considered.
