The Importance of Reading Classical Texts Again: The Little Prince as an Exercise of Education and Self-Care

Reading the classics again does not only mean coming into contact with aspects of tradition and culture that may be unknown, but, at the same time, this is an exercise capable of offering the reader moments of reflection related to the social context they describe. They are not only, therefore, a means that accompanies person during growth but a tool of education, through which to take care of themselves. From this perspective, The Little Prince appears to be a key classic text, not only for the importance it still has today for the world literary context (it has been translated into over 400 languages), but above all for the educational significance that emerges from the plot and in the narrative. The Little Prince tells of a "training journey", of emotions, of human and spiritual growth, of values such as friendship and brotherhood, of educational care, of diversity, of loneliness and distance and, finally, also of death. It is a story full of metaphors through which we can question the nature of today's society and the future of humanity. It is not a simple story to read and interpret and it certainly has very obvious educational implications: the concept of Care, the relevance of imagination for the interpretation of reality and the importance of authentic relationships (like the relationship between the Little Prince to the Rose). Reading this literary masterpiece means interpreting the many meanings of a story that seems apparently simple and unreal. Rileggere i classici non significa solo entrare in contatto con aspetti della tradizione e della cultura che possono essere sconosciuti, ma, allo stesso tempo, si tratta di un esercizio in grado di offrire al lettore momenti di riflessione legati al contesto sociale che descrivono. Non sono solo, quindi, un mezzo che accompagna la persona nella crescita, ma uno strumento di educazione, attraverso il quale prendersi cura di sé. Da questo punto di vista, Il Piccolo Principe appare come un testo classico fondamentale, non solo per l'importanza che ancora oggi riveste nel contesto letterario mondiale (è stato tradotto in oltre 400 lingue), ma soprattutto per il significato educativo che emerge dalla sua narrazione. Il Piccolo Principe racconta di un "viaggio di formazione", di emozioni, di crescita umana e di valori come l'amicizia e la fratellanza, di cura educativa, di diversità, di solitudine e lontananza e, infine, anche di morte. È una storia ricca di metafore attraverso le quali possiamo interrogarci sulla natura della società odierna e sul futuro dell'umanità. Non è una storia semplice da leggere e interpretare e sicuramente ha implicazioni educative molto evidenti: il concetto di Cura, la rilevanza dell'immaginazione per l'interpretazione della realtà e l'importanza delle relazioni autentiche (come quella tra il Piccolo Principe e la Rosa). Leggere questo capolavoro letterario significa interpretare i molteplici significati di una storia apparentemente semplice e irreale.
