In this paper we are going to analyze how the image of Trieste, the closest Italian city claimed by both the countries, changed in Yugoslavia, focusing on the period from 1954 (when a territorial settlement was achieved with London Memorandum) to the mid 60's. We will see that the Adriatic city left behind the troubled image connected to the territorial question and turned into an open window towards the Western world as well as a filter through which the Western trends penetrate into Yugoslavia.

Abstract

In this paper we are going to analyze how the image of Trieste, the closest Italian city claimed by both the countries, changed in Yugoslavia, focusing on the period from 1954 (when a territorial settlement was achieved with London Memorandum) to the mid 60's. We will see that the Adriatic city left behind the troubled image connected to the territorial question and turned into an open window towards the Western world as well as a filter through which the Western trends penetrate into Yugoslavia.
