A Sixteenth-Century Libertine Priest. Francesco Calcagno

Il saggio offre un nuovo contributo all'attuale revisione storiografica della categoria di libertinismo in età moderna, attraverso il significativo caso di studio del prete bresciano Francesco Calcagno. Il suo processo per ateismo, sodomia e bestemmia, avvenuto nel 1550 a Venezia, costituisce un importante osservatorio sul fenomeno e sulla valenza politica, religiosa, culturale della trasgressione sessuale e intellettuale nel Cinquecento, ancora poco indagata in sé e come componente, insieme al non conformismo religioso, del moderno radicalismo europeo. Il libertinismo risulta così più complesso, sfaccettato e ampio a livello spaziale, temporale e concettuale. The essay offers a new contribution to the current historiographic revision of the category of libertinism in the modern age, through the significant case study of the Brescian priest Francesco Calcagno. His trial for atheism, sodomy and blasphemy, which took place in 1550 in Venice, constitutes an important observatory on the phenomenon and on the political, religious and cultural significance of sexual and intellectual transgression in the sixteenth century, still little investigated in itself and as a component, together with religious nonconformism, of modern European radicalism. Libertinism is thus more complex, multifaceted and broad in space, time and concept.
