Sguardi da oltreoceano: fare storia fuori dal canone

Il saggio riflette sulle auto-narrazioni prodotte di recente nel contesto statunitense da donne di diversa generazione e provenienza impegnate nella ricerca storica, dentro e fuori dalle istituzioni universitarie. Le principali fonti di riferimento sono costituite dai testi autobiografici raccolti in Reshaping Women’s History. Voices of Nontraditional Women historians, curato da Julie E. Gallagher e Barbara Winslow (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2018) e No Straight Path. Becoming Women Historians, a cura di Elizabeth Jacoway (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State Univ. Press, 2019). Il primo volume riguarda le storie di vita di 18 vincitrici del premio Catherine Prelinger, conferito annualmente (dal 1998) dal Coordinating Council for Women in History a ricercatrici indipendenti, mentre il secondo comprende una decina di saggi autobiografici sui percorsi di studio e carriera di storiche di professione negli Stati uniti del Sud. Attraverso storie di vita e di lavoro il saggio indaga tempi e dinamiche della professionalizzazione del mestiere di storico/a negli Stati uniti e si interroga sull'attuale crisi/trasformazione della storia in ambito accademico, sul ruolo pubblico di storiche e storici. The essay focuses on the self-narratives recently produced in the US context by women of different generations and backgrounds engaged in historical research inside and outside academic institutions. The main sources are the autobiographical texts collected in Reshaping Women's History. Voices of Nontraditional Women historians, edited by Julie E. Gallagher and Barbara Winslow (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2018) and No Straight Path. Becoming Women Historians, edited by Elizabeth Jacoway (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State Univ. Press, 2019). The first volume collects the life stories of 18 winners of the Catherine Prelinger Prize, awarded annually (since 1998) by the Coordinating Council for Women in History to independent women researchers, while the second includes a dozen autobiographical essays on the study and career paths of professional historians in the southern United States. Through stories of life and work, the essay investigates the timing and dynamics of the professionalisation of the profession of historian in the United States and questions the current crisis/transformation of history in academia, the public role of historians and historians.
