The essay provides the first comprehensive anthology of the reception of the work of the American artist Gordon Matta-Clark in Italy during the artist's lifetime. By virtue of a full transcription of early critical accounts on his work, the essay contextualizes the reception of his work within the artist's interventions in Europe and Italy and the broader interest for American art at that time by critics like Germano Celant. Significantly, by investigating the sources, I was able to find out previously unpublished statements by the artist, which appeared exclusively in Italian magazines at that time.
