Substantial Transformation of Military Heritage. Climate-masterplanning to Protect and Transform Old Barracks

The chapter describes future urban challenges on transforming former old barracks of distinctive typology, strong identity and historic value located in both core and surrounding urban areas in Florence. It shows how the relationship between old barracks and the urban environment must be considered as a key to understanding the significance of urban change and how complexity of intervention should be faced properly. It focuses mainly on climate-masterplanning in defining the ‘re-development form’ according to the sustainability principles and ‘ecological status’ of a site. It shows how sustainable regeneration approach and implementation is the consequence of advanced understanding of context, preservation, and evaluation of cultural heritage. In this perspective and taking into consideration the ‘Historic Urban Landscape’ (HUL) approach, planning and design can be adopted suitably.
