Abstract

Te paper traces the ways in which Vallombrosan monasticism, which arose as a reformed branch of the Order of St Benedict, spread from Tuscany to northern Italy mainly from the beginnings of the twelfth century, and follows the fortunes of the Po valley settlements up to the height of the fifteenth century, with a particular focus on the origins of the cloister of Santissima Trinità in Verona. Te text is a synthesis of the research on this regular family, conducted in the light of the most recent historiography on the subject, which has shown how the obedience founded by the Florentine Giovanni Gualberto constituted the most important interlocutor of the Milanese pataria during the ecclesiastical reform of the eleventh century. At the same time, it highlights the ways in which the congregation was able to establish itself in many rural and, above all, urban areas of the medieval ‘Lombardy’ from the twelfth century onwards, observing its development in the early fourteenth century, which saw the greatest expansion of the Order, and in the height of the Renaissance
