The archaeological discovery of the Imperial Mausoleum and its enclosure began with the post-war renovation of the Olivetan Monastery complex and continued with research by M Mirabella Roberti in the 1960s. The Mausoleum was built in the western suburbs, on the edge of an early imperial necropolis, frequented from the Constantinian age onwards by Christians from the upper social classes and members of the clergy.
