Abstract

In the increasing complexities of contemporary society, the discipline of Design is expanding and modifying its boundaries to respond quickly to the evolving needs of individuals and communities. Designers navigate this liquid, multicultural, and connected modernity, acting as mediators and exploring new paths to inspire new visions of the world. This study explores the transformative nature of design, which goes beyond tan- gible expressions to shape intangible dimensions of culture, imagination, and desires. Designers act as mediums, integrating diverse influences to generate new conceptual spaces and models that transcend conventional boundaries. They bridge creativity and innovation, navigating between subjective and objective realms, form and function, to orchestrate meaningful connections. Starting from Boden’s notion of creativity, the designer’s cognitive model emphasizes visual interpretation, foresight, and engaging communication. The Design Thinking process, a cyclical process of divergent and convergent, analytical and generative phases, enacts its transformative role by contributing to the generation of innovative solutions that resonate with deep human needs and aspirations. Integrating design into innovation processes is essential, guiding technological advancements toward user-centered, sustainable, and culturally resonant outcomes. Design driven approaches, recognized by the European Commission, are instrumental in enhancing business competitiveness and regional development. This integration fosters innovation ecosystems where designers, companies, institutions, and stakeholders collaborate, leveraging design as a strategic asset for addressing global challenges and fostering sustainable growth. The study highlights the importance of creativity and design in this context, presenting a dynamic and interconnected landscape where the role of the designer is pivotal in shaping the future of society and its cultural and technological evolution.
