This Volume collects the fruits of the DIRECOESO Project - Law and rights for intelligent growth, social cohesion and sustainability in the Metropolitan City and in Tuscany - of the University of Florence, co-financed by the Fondazione CR Firenze. Part One reflects the first fundamental juncture of the Project, focused on mediation as a paradigm and tool for social cohesion. Mediation has not only been studied from a theoretical point of view, with interdisciplinary, historical, comparative, anthropological and philosophical insights, but has also been analyzed "in the field", opening up to the experiences of social, civil and criminal mediation present in the Florentine territory and integrating with the "Mediation at School" Project (2022/2023 edition). This last Project, developed and implemented within the Third University Mission, had as its main objectives the dissemination of mediation culture among students and teachers of secondary schools and the collection and analysis of data on the perception and management of conflicts by students and their families. The culminating event of this first phase was the Conference “Mediation between prevention and resolution of social conflict”, held on 2-3 March 2023 in Florence, at Villa Ruspoli, whose Proceedings are collected in Part One of this Volume. This First Part is crowned by an essay by a great Master of criminal law, Prof. Francesco Palazzo, resulting from his Lectio magistralis at the Advanced Course “Restorative Justice”, which was held in January-March 2023 at the Department of Legal Sciences in Florence and was integrated into the final phase with the aforementioned Conference. Part Two reflects the second fundamental dimension of the Project: the use of technological innovations not only and not so much for the efficiency of public administration but above all for the promotion of active citizenship and therefore the growth of social cohesion and democratic participation in the various articulations of the res publica. Also in this case, attention was paid not only to theoretical reflection but also to the practical experiences that emerged in the territory. At the conceptual, social, institutional and techno-scientific level there is much that is new and promising: with this research we wanted to intercept and investigate these evolutions, in order to highlight both their multiple potentialities and their inevitable shadows and critical issues.
