This article analyses the techniques of dramatic space construction employed by Juan de la Cueva, one of the main exponents of tragic experimentation under Felipe II (1577-1587). It offers concrete examples in which the playwright, deviating from the neo-Aristotelian model, utilizes the stage space of the emerging commercial theatres in a more dynamic way, thus anticipating the fluidity and “spatial flexibility” that would later characterize space construction in the Spanish Golden Age theatre. Specifically, the study focuses on those devices that facilitate transitions between different dramatic spaces, such as the change of cuadro, the espacio itinerante, and the escena interior.

Abstract
This article analyses the techniques of dramatic space construction employed by Juan de la Cueva, one of the main exponents of tragic experimentation under Felipe II (1577-1587). It offers concrete examples in which the playwright, deviating from the neo-Aristotelian model, utilizes the stage space of the emerging commercial theatres in a more dynamic way, thus anticipating the fluidity and “spatial flexibility” that would later characterize space construction in the Spanish Golden Age theatre. Specifically, the study focuses on those devices that facilitate transitions between different dramatic spaces, such as the change of cuadro, the espacio itinerante, and the escena interior.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
