The pirate embodies the most radical form of enmity. In order to justify this extreme antagonism, to understand the roots of this powerful enmity, we need to put on the lens provided by the philosophy of international law and emphasise the dimension of physical space. From this point of view, according to a relationship that Carl Schmitt had already occasion to highlight, the irreducible otherness characterising the figure of the pirate is linked to the deeply eccentric nature of the space he inhabits: the sea. It is a relationship that finds multiple confirmation in the historical events of the Mediterranean.

Abstract
The pirate embodies the most radical form of enmity. In order to justify this extreme antagonism, to understand the roots of this powerful enmity, we need to put on the lens provided by the philosophy of international law and emphasise the dimension of physical space. From this point of view, according to a relationship that Carl Schmitt had already occasion to highlight, the irreducible otherness characterising the figure of the pirate is linked to the deeply eccentric nature of the space he inhabits: the sea. It is a relationship that finds multiple confirmation in the historical events of the Mediterranean.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
