This chapter examines the contribution made by 19th-century European travel literature, particularly French, to Orhan Pamuk's Istanbul poetics. The aim of the analysis is twofold: on the one hand, to better understand how representations of the urban space of Constantinople/Istanbul, produced in the Western world, have been diachronically received and assimilated in the Turkish context; on the other hand, to investigate the ways in which Orhan Pamuk has managed to integrate the repertoire of memories elaborated by Western travellers into his own, highly personal vision of Istanbul.
