The Oscan defixio Murano 2013, no. 1 is an example of a curse of the speech faculties, directed against six opponents. Execration of the ability to speak is particularly frequent in judicial curses (defixiones iudiciariae) cast against a litigant at court. The six persons named were to be part of the defense of the curser’s opponent. Judicial curses were generally produced during an impending lawsuit, in the hope of changing its outcome.
