This study examines the intricate dynamics of political leadership in post-communist Romania, spanning from the tumultuous events of 1989 to the complexities of contemporary governance in 2024. The fall of communism in Romania, marked by violent upheaval and a complex blend of popular uprising and internal regime coup, set the stage for a transformative political landscape. This leadership transition was pivotal in shaping Romania’s post-communist trajectory, establishing a presidency-centered democracy through direct elections that emphasized personal rapport over institutional checks and balances. Under successive leaders, the Presidency maintained a unique bond with the electorate, fostering high public trust that often - surpassed confidence in political parties. This phenomenon also manifested in consistently higher voter turnout for presidential elections by comparison to legislative ones. The study further explores the intertwined roles of Presidents and Prime Ministers, filtered through their party affiliations, in shaping inter-party relations and parliamentary dynamics. It highlights the enduring influence of former communist elites within the National Salvation Front and their subsequent transformation into efficient post-communist leaders and party builders. The evolution of party leadership, particularly within semi-presidential settings, underscores its pivotal role in coalition politics and governance strategies.

Abstract
The evolution of party leadership, particularly within semi-presidential settings, underscores its pivotal role in coalition politics and governance strategies.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
