Hermann’s Bridge before Hermann: on the metrical practice of Lorenz Rhodoman (and others)

Prima della scoperta del ‘ponte di Hermann’ nel 1805, un gran numero di umanisti, eruditi e studiosi avevano scritto infiniti carmi greci senza ovviamente preoccuparsi di tale norma metrica ancora ignota. E' tuttavia notevole che alcuni grecisti del XVI secolo, tra cui Lorenz Rhodoman, molto raramente ponessero fine di parola dopo il ‘quarto trocheo’. L'analisi della loro prassi metrica getta luce sulla particolare sensibilità di Rhodoman alle finezze della metrica greca. ------ Before the discovery of ‘Hermann’s Bridge’ in 1805, a great number of humanists, learned men and professional scholars had been writing innumerable Greek poems obviously paying no attention to the still unknown metrical rule. Yet it proves quite remarkable that some 16th-century Hellenists, apparently unaware of such restrictions, nonetheless place a word-end after the ‘fourth trochee’ very rarely. Lorenz Rhodoman is one of them. Analyzing their metrical practice, we can shed some light on Rhodoman's peculiar sensitivity to the niceties of Greek metre.
