The paper deals with Latin and Greek written evidence in Dalmatia, their coexistence and intersections in the local graphic culture in a period characterised by the breakdown of the graphic unity of the Latin script and the multiplication of lower-case scripts individualised in the Greek tradition while all-encompassing political and social changes were taking place: the definition of ecclesiastical jurisdiction between Rome and Constantinople and the migratory movement of different Slavic-speaking peoples that redrew the geopolitical map of the entire Illyrian region. Their Christianisation started a process of acculturation from which new graphic traditions –Glagolitic and Cyrillic – were to emerge, which during the Middle Ages would merge into the regional varied graphic situation. The paper examines the situation of the plurality of graphic traditions in the Dalmatian territory, characterised by specific directions and developments of different writing schools.
