Abstract

The rapid evolution of wireless communication standards enables pervasive interaction within smarter, self-configuring environments. To manage unpredictable applications and integrate diverse domains, a flexible network architecture is required. This paper presents the research conducted by the DaCoNetS Laboratory at the University of Florence, focusing on implementing Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Internet of Things (IoT) frameworks. Through regional and industrial collaborations, the lab has developed advanced platforms for hydrological monitoring and 5G telehealth. Looking forward, their work drives the convergence of Next-Generation networks, Artificial Intelligence, Edge/Fog Computing, and the Tactile Internet to build resilient, human-centered digital infrastructures.
