The essay focuses on monastic friendship among women. Three specific cases, occurring within the Order of Preachers between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries, are analysed. They reveal the existence of lively circles of women who exchanged knowledge, but also show that the transmission of female monastic memory included cases in which bonds of friendship between nuns were invented, serving to legitimise the role of a particular monastery or its spiritual heritage.
