This essay explores the historical and symbolic transformation of the Church of San Pier Scheraggio in Florence, illustrating how a sacred site was progressively re-signified and consumed by secular power. Originally located within the enclave of the Ghibelline Uberti family, the church served as both an ecclesiastical space and a civic assembly hall. Following the rise of the Secondo Popolo regime in 1282 and the post-mortem condemnation of Farinata degli Uberti for heresy in 1283, the Florentine Commune repurposed the church for political rituals, effectively erasing its former factional associations. Over subsequent centuries, the physical structure was gradually dismantled and absorbed into civic developments, most notably through Giorgio Vasari’s construction of the Uffizi complex, leading to the ultimate loss of its original sacred identity.
