The contribution examines the consolidation of the archaeological masonry at Rocca San Silvestro within a broader multidisciplinary project of conservation and enhancement. The intervention was based on a preliminary knowledge process integrating archaeological research, geological analysis, morphometric survey, diagnostic investigations, structural assessment, and material characterisation. Particular attention was paid to the deterioration of double-leaf stone masonry, in which mortar plays a fundamental structural role. The adopted measures included rainwater drainage and control, repointing of joints, sealing and reshaping of wall crests, deep grouting with compatible mortars, and, where required, the insertion of ties and reinforced injections to counteract the outward deformation of the wall faces. The study compares these interventions with the consolidation work carried out by Piero Sanpaolesi in the 1970s at the Friday Mosque of Qazvin, Iran. Although separated by more than forty years, the two cases reveal a significant methodological continuity: preliminary investigation, identification of deterioration and instability mechanisms, critical interpretation of the building, and selection of targeted consolidation techniques. The comparison highlights how past restoration experiences can still inform contemporary practice, particularly in relation to material compatibility, minimum intervention, and the long-term assessment of consolidation methods.
