Abstract This contribution examines the complex relationship between Italian Freemasonry and Fascism, from the origins of the Fascist movement to the persecution and dissolution of Masonic organizations under the regime. During the early phase, significant sectors of Italian Freemasonry viewed Fascism with sympathy, sharing some of its patriotic, secular, and anti-socialist positions. The presence of numerous Freemasons among the participants in the foundation of the Fasci di combattimento and among early Fascist leaders illustrates the close interaction between the two spheres, but does not demonstrate the existence of a unified Masonic project aimed at bringing Fascism to power. The analysis therefore distinguishes between the individual choices of Freemasons and the official positions of Masonic institutions. After the March on Rome, relations rapidly deteriorated: the incompatibility between Fascism and Freemasonry, established in 1923, paved the way for persecution and the dissolution of the lodges. Subsequently, part of the Masonic movement joined the anti-Fascist opposition, both in Italy and in exile.
