Designed in the 1960s by Giuseppe Vaccaro as part of Cardinal Lercaro's program for the suburban development of Bologna, the church of San Giovanni Bosco represents the mature synthesis of the architect's research on sacred space and local urban identity. The building reinterprets Bologna's historical features—particularly its tower-like verticality and the rich tactile quality of exposed brickwork—through a modern language that moves beyond the traditional basilican plan in line with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Through the aggregation of asymmetrical volumes around a central hall, functional distribution, and a masterful handling of natural light, the architecture transforms an imposing “fortress of faith” into a dynamic, welcoming, and deeply participatory space for the community.

Abstract
Designed in the 1960s by Giuseppe Vaccaro as part of Cardinal Lercaro's program for the suburban development of Bologna, the church of San Giovanni Bosco represents the mature synthesis of the architect's research on sacred space and local urban identity. The building reinterprets Bologna's historical features—particularly its tower-like verticality and the rich tactile quality of exposed brickwork—through a modern language that moves beyond the traditional basilican plan in line with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Through the aggregation of asymmetrical volumes around a central hall, functional distribution, and a masterful handling of natural light, the architecture transforms an imposing “fortress of faith” into a dynamic, welcoming, and deeply participatory space for the community.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
