Di "scoperta" in "scoperta": la progressiva emersione dell'infanzia e dell'adolescenza

Il saggio ricostruisce l’emergere, per ragioni naturali ma anche storiche, di due età dell’uomo, l’infanzia e l’adolescenza prima ignorate nelle loro specificità, evidenziando le ragioni economiche, sociali e culturali che hanno reso possibile la loro “comparsa” e poi la loro progressiva centralità nel dibattito politico-sociale e pedagogico degli ultimi tre secoli. L’interesse per l’adolescenza è più recente, risalendo infatti solo agli albori del XX secolo, per effetto, anche in questo caso, di una serie di concause che hanno consentito ad un numero crescente di ragazzi di posticipare l’inserimento nel mondo del lavoro e dunque di non uniformarsi precocemente al comportamento adulto ma di svilupparne di tipici, propri cioè della loro stagione esistenziale. Lo sguardo percorre dapprima il contesto europeo, per poi concentrarsi su quello italiano fino alla fine del secolo scorso. The essay reconstructs the emergence, for historical as well as for natural reasons, of two ages of man, infancy and adolescence, which had previously been ignored in their specificity, emphasising the economic, social and cultural forces that made possible their “arrival” and their increasing importance to the political, social and educational debate of the last three centuries. Interest in adolescence is more recent, dating only from the early twentieth century, as the result of a series of linked causes that enabled growing numbers of young people to delay their entry into the workplace, and thus not to conform early to adult behaviour but to acquire the characteristics proper to their existential stage of development. After examining the Europe-wide context, the study concentrates on Italy up to the end of the twentieth century.
