The chapter examines the development of new urban sites and areas that is often regarded as a normal procedure of contemporary cities growth on an international scale, with particular reference to the European experience. New planning and design approaches look at some alternative ways and explore the relationship between more sustainable development processes and urban patterns. New design considerations and review of design principles, in which built environment distributes benefits between their occupants and users and generates equitability and sustainability, can be used to structure a site or an area in the contemporary city. Planning factors and public policies effected the ways of shaping the built environment, preventing local people and users to meet their needs and environmental welfare. Different qualities of urban space and mix of functions, which can be related to the wider city’s activities, are now used to suggest how places can work and how they can interact in the course of change. Sustainable design processes within a wider variety of social, economic and political forces can shape the new form of urban quarters.
