To study the effect of the position of isomorphous substitution on adsorption of triasulfuron, thr ee smectites at different charge localisation were made homoionic to Al3+ and studied by means of FT-IR spectroscopy, The experiments were carried out on self supporting air-dried clay films from chloroform solution but the spectra were recorded using DRIFT technique. Triasulfuron was adsorbed on smectites by protonation of its triazinyl moiety and co-ordination of its C=O group. Two bands at about 1760 cm(-1) and 1790 cm(-1) suggests that some byproduct(s) was formed as a consequence of the interaction with clay: at room temperature these bands were observed on nontronite only. while on heating at 50 degrees C, the appeared on all clays, but their intensity was higher on hectorite. The results were related to the water content of the clays at different temperature in addition to the localisation of isomorphous substitutions.
