The development of critical reading abilities: one study on children aged 9 to 14. Aim of the present study was to investigate the development of critical reasining in a reading task. Our sample consisted of 1079 pupils, 512 males and 567 females, aged 9 to 14, attending primary and secondary schools in Florence. ALl the participants were asked to perform a standardized test (5-VM, Boschi, Aprile & Scibetta, 1995) about critical reading competences. The relationship between reading abilities, age and genre was verified using a multiple regression model implemented with generalized Addittive Models. The results shown a non-linear increase of critical reading abilities, and significative difference between males and females with the enhance of the age, confirming the relevance of genre variable in the improvement of reading critical competences.
