The Italian economy is going through a critical period The leading Italian official analysts attribute to the feature of the Italian productive system (small firm size and specialization in traditional sectors) the responsibility of the relative decline in the Italian GDP growth since the ’90s. This feature of the Italian economic system is at the same time the cause and the consequence of a remarkable reallocation of employment that occurred in the last years both from the industry toward the service sectors and, inside the industry sectors, from the production of home and personal goods persons toward the production of instrumental goods (light mechanics). Such reallocation among sectors, having different productivity levels, undoubtedly influences the productivity performance of the whole system. The paper analyses the dynamic of the aggregate Italian labour productivity, trying to evaluate the impact that the changes in the employment structure, in terms of economic activities and firm size, have had on this dynamic. The empirical analysis is performed on 1998-2004 Italian data. The structural decomposition analysis (shift and share), is commonly used in literature to this aim. In the paper, a minor modification of the usual decomposition is proposed for isolating the effect of structural changes of firm size.
