The existence of microsatellite loci in eukaryotic genomes has been known since the 1970s, although the large number and widespread occurrence of these sequences was not demonstrated until1982, when Hamada and collaborators discovered multiple copies of the poly (dT - dG)n motif in yeast through to vertebrates. Abstract

This paper reviews the characteristics of microsatellite repeats.
