The paper presents various measurements of speech performance in the romance languages, derived from the C-ORAL-ROM corpus and focuses on the strong variability of linguistic behavior. The paper identifies cross-linguistic correlations between general language properties of speech and specific features of the context in which the performance takes place. This leads to the conclusion that essential spoken language behaviors are determined by contextual factors.
