Vehicle accidents caused by wild fauna, mainly ungulates, are assuming in Tuscany important proportions, with remarkable implications of social and economic issues. In 2004, Tuscany Region has promoted the realisation of long term study on the topic of “car accidents caused by the wild fauna in the Tuscany Region” with the aim of a deeper knowledge of the characteristics of this topic in order to suggest possible solutions of prevention and mitigation. The study, proposed by C.I.R.Se.M.A.F., has been carried out by the Department of Animal Sciences (Di.Sci.Zoo.) and Department of Agricultural and Forest Engineering (D.I.A.F.) of the University of Florence. The research has carried out to assess the reports of car accidents happened on the road network of Tuscany (in the period 2001‐2008) and forwarded to the Tuscany Region and to the Province Administrations. Subsequently, a detailed analysis of the collected information has been carried out in order to give evidence of the evolution and of the main peculiarities of these occurrences. In this book the main results of the research are illustrated, and the total aspect of the studied phenomenon is explained by means of diagrams and cartographies and some considerations about the practical possibilities of its reduction are presented. The main obtained results can be summarised as follows: - for the studied period, figures of the phenomenon is increased in the whole Regional territory; - the phenomenon interests in different way all the Tuscan Provinces; - the number of the interested Municipalities is increased over time; - the most important wild species involved are ungulates, in particular Wild boar and Roe deer; - the accidents happen in every day of the week and they increase in the weekend; - the time band of higher risk range between the twilight and the first hours of the morning; - the great animal presence is not the only and most important cause of the accidents; - the awareness of the drivers and their behaviour in driving play a fundamental role to avoid car accidents or to determine more serious consequences. Moreover, the study permitted to identify for each Province the most dangerous roads. Finally, the main guidelines are pointed out for the prevention and the mitigation of the problem.

Abstract
Finally, the main guidelines are pointed out for the prevention and the mitigation of the problem.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
