Near Torrita di Siena a Roman and late Roman settlement was excavated, perhaps identifiable with the statio Manliana along the ancient via Cassia. Artefacts dating from the end of the 1st century BC to the middle of the 6th century AD were recovered mostly from a wide surface, suggesting the presence of a market area. The study of pottery allowed two groups of red-painted ware to be selected (end of the 2nd-3rd century and middle of the 4th-5th century), showing a homogeneous composition of clays and glazes. Archaeometric analyses of the samples seem to confirm a local origin for both productions. However, as the work is still in progress some questions remain open: the identification of the argillaceous deposit; the localisation of the workshop(s); the manufacturing procedures adopted, probably responsible for different shades of colour of the matrix as well as for the unlike textures and for the sometimes evident presence of cracks.
