A synthesis of 15 Pliocene pollen records along a latitudinal transect evidences the existence of phytogeographic regions, the spreading of which evokes the modern ones. Thermic and hydric latitudinal gradients already existed across the northern hemisphere. A consistent climatic evolution is drawn up from the studied pollen diagrams, and climatic evolution is in good agreement with δ18O curves. The large number of pollen localities as well as the relationship of the pollen records with latitude lead to quantify Pliocene climate. Such a synthesis has been made possible thanks to Zagwijn's investigations who proposed a continuous climatostratigraphy of the period based on botanical pollen analyses.
