The article, taking into the due account the traditional concepts of “insurance” and “risk”, evaluates their significant evolution when they are applied to the environmental sector. Afterwards, it deals both with the environmental pollution as negative externality and with the environmental responsibility as a way to compensate or deter. Therefore, it considers the risk of pollution as a specific object of the insurance contract, and it analyses some alternative forms of environmental risk’s financial guarantee, such as the environmental finance.
