Abstract

The word classification etymologically derives from the latin word classis: the five categories in which the ancient city of Rome was divided according to the landed property; the expression social classes derives form the word classis too. To classify something means to group objects or concepts according to their features, distiguishing them from objects and concepts which do not present this common aspects. S.R. Ranganathan first referred to an arrangement of concepts into an ordered structure, it refers to philosophers and scientists who study the way to organize in a logical way the knowledge universe. Than Ranganathan referred to the way to organize information in a catalogue or in a bibliography, it refers to librarian who organize knowledge passed by bibliographic resources. Classification schema constitute the grat maps of knowledge; classifying is a technique to catalogue. To get a good result it is necessary for the cataloger to contextualize the type of library (eg, general, specialized); type of bibliographic resources; type of recipient to whom the library is addressed. Classifying essentially consists in synthesizing. There are numerous bibliographic classification systems, developed over time. Today, it is important to analyze the classification on the web. The first instruments to use taxonomies have been the web directory. The classifications are used in the web world in a variety of databases and search engines, as well as the organization of Web sites. Very important is also social classification through tagging (folksonomy) which can be considered as an alternative way, instead of traditional classification models, and as a complementary tool.Classificazione deriva etimologicamente dal termine latino classis: le cinque categorie in cui fu divisa la città di Roma antica, in base al patrimonio fondiario; dalla stessa radice deriva l’espressione classi sociali.
