This paper is concerned with evaluating radar performance when antenna polarization is controlled, so as to improve the ratio of the target signal power to the unwanted signal power. Three different cases of unwanted signals are considered: background noise, rain clutter and intentional interference (jamming). In the first case the impovement in detecning targets in the presence of background white Gaussian noise is evaluated when adapting transmit and/or receipt polarization to the target polarization properties. In the second case, which refers to target in the presence of rain clutter, improvements in signal-to-clutter ratio are evaluated when using an adaptive polarization canceller (APC) proposed by Nathanson. In the third case, which refers to target in the presence of jamming, the improvements in the signal-to-interference ratio are evaluated when using a symmetric adaptive polarization canceller (SAPC) proposed by D. Giuli.

Abstract

Giuli.
