The paper is a contribution of the book “Architectural heritage in Mediterranean port cities. Contributions and procedures for knowledge and conservation” is the product of surveys and researches leaded by a multi disciplinary team in two pilot sites: Tartous (Syria) and Tyre (Lebanon). The book describes part of the objectives of Euromed heritage IV Project “ Mare Nostrum. A Heritage Trail along the Phoenician maritime routes in the Mediterranean Sea”, EH4MN150-825, Università degli Studi di Firenze coordinator, responsible Carlo Alberto Garzonio. The dissemination of results offers a contribution in raising the awareness of the architectural heritage value in Mediterranean cultures. The book proposes guidelines for knowledge and conservation procedures, as methodological tools for all those who work in the field of conservation. The article describes the stone materials, the diagnostic survey and the analytical methods in particular of the weathering processes of the pilot sites. An important aspect of the culture of the sites is the culture of the stones (mainly limestones): the exploitation, the use, the technicals of working and the use in the history. The main analysis procedures for the characterization and conservation are described with the aim to illustrate the methodologies applicable to many historical and monumental sites of the Mediterranean: geological and geomorphological features of the sites, geomechanical analyses of the used limestones (in quarry, in the site, of blocks of the walls, masonry, of the archeological and historical buildings of the ancient centres); minero-petrographical , physical and chemical analyses.
